10 Mbps ADSL and cheaper ADSL: Telkom to disappoint?

Telkom today announced its financial results for the year ended 31 March 2010, and Telkom CEO Reuben September described the past financial year as being “tough with muted revenue growth”.

Telkom is facing increased competition which has prompted speculation that they would either declare the launch of their much anticipated 10 Mbps ADSL service or increase their data bundle sizes. Sadly the fixed line operator has remained mute on both accounts in its SENS announcement this morning.

More South African broadband subscribers than ever are experiencing the freedom of uncapped broadband thanks to MWEB which shook up the market with its affordable uncapped ADSL services in March.

Affordable uncapped ADSL is widely heralded as one of the most significant developments in the local broadband market since the launch of ADSL back in 2002, but when the euphoria about affordable uncapped broadband services subsided many users realized that they should have read the fine print.

The SEACOM cable itself has achieved an impressive 100% uptime since its launch, but since the company provides an end to end service from Johannesburg to London it has to take responsibility for all downtime, ...

There were always going to be two sides, victors and victims, in the uncapped ADSL price war and the first significant scalp has been claimed.

Over the last few months ADSL prices plummeted – both for usage based (per-GB) accounts and uncapped services.

Predictions were rife that these significant price cuts would result in the smaller players exiting the market due to pressure on their margins and business models, and the uncapped ADSL market has now claimed its first high profile casualty.

The organisation says that the ‘Telkom tax’ is one of the factors still keeping broadband prices artificially high in South Africa and believes that there is scope for line rental charges to be restructured and reduced. In particular, ISPA believes that consumers should ...
