Vodacom recently presented its preliminary financial results for the year ending 31 March 2010, showing an increase in headline earnings per share of 22.3 percent to 510 cents per share.
Mobile broadband was one of the strongest growth areas for Vodacom, with 31.9% growth in data revenue to R4.5 billion and a 42.3% growth in data customers in South Africa to 1.1 million. There are currently 7.6 million active data users across the Vodacom group.
Over the last twelve months Vodacom grew its South African mobile broadband base from 800,000 last year to 1.138 million. Data connect cards made up 728,000 of all mobile broadband connections.
Vodacom further reported that data traffic was up 58% while there was a 45% increase in smartphone use on the network – taking the number of smartphones up to 2 million.
Average usage per device
Vodacom further unveiled the number of active Internet devices on its network and average data usage associated with each device:
728,000 data cards: Average usage = 480MB per month
iPhone 3GS: Average usage = 150MB per month
2 million smartphones: Average usage = 23MB per month
3.1 million active ‘basic internet capable handsets’: Average usage = 14MB per month
Growing network
Vodacom claimed to have the leading mobile data network in the country, with 3,342 14.4 Mbps 3G sites in the country. Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys further pointed out that they currently have 140 21.6 Mbps capable HSPA+ sites.
Uys said that they are investing heavily in increasing their transmission capacity, something which will make it possible for the company to extend its HSPA+ footprint.
Uys said that Vodacom is planning to connect an additional 1,000 base stations to its fibre network over the next twelve months, complimenting the 140 HSPA+ connected towers which are already served by fibre transmission links.
Uys said that Vodacom plans to cement its leadership in the broadband space through rapid broadband infrastructure deployment, the introduction of low cost Internet devices like the Linkbook and a drive to push further adoption of smartphones.
