Lephalale - A 39-year-old man who broke into a shack and raped a woman while drunk has been sentenced to seven years in prison in the Ellisras Regional Court in Lephalale, Limpopo.

Frans Mokoena, who raped the 25-year-old woman at about 20:00 on March 19, had pleaded guilty to a charge of rape.

“He entered a shack in Steve Biko village in a drunken state and forcefully broke down the door,” said Lephalale police spokesperson Frans Mokoena.

"The victim's boyfriend woke up and ran away, leaving her on her own. Mokoena then dragged her out of the shack to the yard and raped her."

Mokoena, who lives in Abbotspoort, about 15km from Steve Biko village, handed himself over to the police the following day after hearing that the case was being investigated.

"He had remorse. He didn't know the victim and had never seen her before," Mokoena said.

Magistrate P Prinsloo, who was handling nine rape cases on the same day, took into account that Mokoena was a first offender who had committed the crime while being under the influence of alcohol.

He nevertheless said he wanted to send out a strong message to would-be rapists that they would pay for their crimes.

"There are too many rape cases in Lephalale and the community feels unsafe walking the streets," he commented.
