Gauteng liquor licences to be reviewed
2011-05-31 12:28

Johannesburg - All liquor licences and permits in Gauteng will be reviewed, economic development MEC Qedani Mahlangu said on Tuesday.

"I believe South Africans deserve better legislation," she told a media briefing on the draft liquor policy in Johannesburg.

"[It will] improve compliance through enhanced enforcement of the liquor legislative and regulatory." There are 30 000 liquor licences in Gauteng.

Mahlangu said her department would also look at discouraging the trading of alcohol on Sundays and religious holidays.

This would address the problem of unlimited access to and consumption of liquor.

"I'm talking about places like Pick n Pay and Spar or any takeaway place," she said.

People would still be able to buy alcohol in restaurants, shebeens and taverns.

WHERE IS THE **Bad(verb/adj)** LOGIC IN THAT

If I cant get alcohol at Spar on Sundays then I'm just gonna drive to a shebeen. Or plan a head and stock my own house for Sunday. People aren't gonna consume less because there will always be a way to get alcohol on a Sunday. So in effect they achieving nothing other than hurting the economy and their own bottom line.

I mean spar, pick n pay etc have to abide to tax laws, shebeens don't. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot

Same **Bad(verb/adj)** lack of logic

Just because i cant buy alcohol on a Sunday doesn't mean i should suddenly start going to church (Well normally I'm too babbelaas to do either on a Sunday)

Besides, only Christians go to church on a Sunday. Now other religions can't get a fix up on Sundays because the govs decided that selling intoxicants should not be consumed by one group of people for some **screwed** up morality reason. PLEASE MAN

Who is governing the sale of alcohol on Diwali, Yum kipur, Eid Mubarak ect THAT'S RIGHT NOBODY.

This whole thing is bullshit, The government should not mix themselves up in religions matters. Especially write laws around it, These are two separate entities and should remain as such.

look i agree with you totally Joker. They shouldve never allowed these places in the 1st place to start selling on a sunday if they going to go back to it. i agree fully with everything you said about the religious bit too.

if you want your alcohol fix you will before hand or go to a shabeen, but to be fair by closing on a sunday it does help a tiny bit to stopping binge drinking. in the uk some pubs close at 11. in scotland 95% of night clubs/pubs close at 12. no selling on a sunday all to help curb their drinking problem. it wont help stopping, it shouldve never been allowed from the beginning.

and just for added debate, sunday is a sunworship day. saturday is the sabbath for all those Christians who dont know Wink just putting it out there....

all except Christianity. Problem is is that the Pope is the anti-christ. Roman Catholicism is very evil in many ways. way too deep to explain. and the Pope along with Catholicism is influencing Christianity. I mean all the churches broke away from Catholics and hence why we called Protestants. We were Protesters. But over the last 5-10 year Catholics have been calling and signing all the churches back to rome. its all quite scary.

if this stuff interests you, watch Mark Woodman. its really hard to swallow, but very honest and interesting.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Christianity too. Its based on Pagan religions who also practiced sun worship. Watch Zeitgeist...

OML!! if there's one thing i hate and can't stand it is bickering about religion... believe in what u want but don't come and discourage other's beliefs, I believe in God, I am a Christian, I do not praise God on a Sunday or pray on a Sunday because it is accepted as the sabbath, I talk to God and pray everyday. There is no point in being religious one day of the week.

Please can we try to keep eae a religion debate free place.

love ya all

oh hello. no one slated any religion. no need to be aggressive. its good to have a debate as long as both parties are not stubborn and are willing to hear out the other side of the coin.

but you are right, its not about just going to church once a week. its whether you believe or not. blind faith. there are many questions about religion that you shouldnt get upset over but rather find the truth. thats what i want. the truth. like the example about church on a Sunday. why did the Catholics change the sabbath from Sat to Sun all those yeares ago. Why did protestants leave the Catholic way but over the last few years go back and agree? just question. you can either be afraid and ignore it or question and try find truth.

but never lose sight of the essence of Christianity. God sent His Son, Jesus, who died on the cross so we may be saved. No other can do this.
