Kochi, the commercial hub of Kerala, has been developing fast over the past few years. By volume of trade Kochi is the biggest city in Kerala. The major industries in Kochi are ship building, oil refining, information technology, chemical industry, electronics hardware, retail and spices and seafood.
One of the largest ship building facilities in India is Cochin Shipyard. It is a fully owned Government of India company. During the last three decades, the company has made lot of progress in the Indian Shipbuilding and ship repair industry. The shipyard has the capacity to build and repair the largest vessels in India. A number of renowned companies from Europe and Middle East have placed orders with the Cochin Shipyard. The nomination to build the country’s first indigenously built Air Defense Ship has been has been placed with the Cochin Shipyard. The company also has the credit of building ships for the Indian Navy. The Shipyard started ship repairing operations in 1982 and since then have been undertaking repairs of all types of ships besides up gradation of ships of oil exploration industry and periodical layup repairs. They also take up life extension of ships of Navy, UTL, Coast Guard, Fisheries, Port Trust and merchant ships of SCI and ONGC. A lot of complex and sophisticated repair jobs are also being taken up by the yard. As a result they have won a number of orders from ONGC.
